Montevideo Shopping set a pioneering benchmark as the first shopping center in the Rio de la Plata region, carving out and capturing a market niche that continues to meet the growing demands of renowned international brands. It has become a local landmark and a catalyst for its surroundings, creating a new central hub of services for the entire capital.
The original building, dating back to 1984, was designed as a large container, defined by self-supporting ceramic enclosures that gave it a strong formal identity, while being economically planned for the high-risk operation it entailed.
Subsequent expansions and internal renovations have incorporated elements of different languages and technologies, adapting to the increasing need for growth driven by sustained commercial success.
In this context, the 2012 expansion focused on the idea of amalgamating and unifying all elements, aiming to enhance pedestrian access as urban-scale events.
This ongoing transformation process seeks to open the container to the city, enhancing the public space with a blend of native charm and sophisticated style.
